The NFDI4Earth Interest groups
Below you'll find information about the NFDI4Earth Interest Groups:
- High-Performance Computing in Earth System Sciences (IG HPC in ESS)
The Interest Group High-Performance Computing in Earth System Sciences (IG HPC in ESS) focuses on enhancing the reuse and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) management of Earth System Science (ESS) data on large computing systems. The group addresses the challenges of managing and analyzing high-resolution, multidimensional datasets generated by HPC infrastructures, especially in fields like weather, climate forecasting, and remote sensing. Click here for more information.
- Long-Term Storage and Archiving (IG LTA)
The Interest Group Long-term Storage and Archiving (IG LTA) provides a community forum to exchange ideas and discuss all aspects of the long-term preservation of digital ESS data. This group brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including researchers, data stewards, and institutional players such as repository providers, archives, governmental agencies, research institutes, and universities, to tackle the challenges of preserving ESS data over the long term. Click here for more information.
- Interest Group for Geology & Geophysics (I3G)
The Interest Group for Geology & Geophysics (I3G) within NFDI4Earth addresses the growing digital requirements in the geological and geophysical sciences. I3G covers seven key topics: data queries, data services, data formats and vocabularies, analytics, the digitization of analogue data, quality, and the development of multi-purpose 3D information systems. Members will apply new solutions and concepts from these areas to improve and interconnect their research data infrastructures. Click here for more information.
- Metadata Standards for Geochemical Data
With the rapid expansion of advanced analytical methods in geoscience research over the past two decades, there has been a lag in the development of standardized metadata formats in data repositories, which is crucial for effective data reuse. The Interest Group for Metadata Standards in Geochemical Data aims to create unified, machine-readable metadata standards to support data reuse, integration, and accessibility across various geochemical sub-fields, in alignment with the FAIR data principles. - FAIR ESS Terminologies (IG FAIRESST)
The key objective of the IG FAIR ESS Terminologies is to provide both situation analysis and inventory of the application of semantic artefacts - including controlled vocabularies, thesauri, and ontologies as well as mappings between such artefacts - for knowledge representation in the Earth System Sciences (ESS). The IG FAIRESST will compile and examine the level of usage of semantic artefacts in the NFDI4Earth network. In this way, the IG will provide fundamental input for the (iterative) refinement of the NFDI4Earth Label. One focus will be the use of tools such as those developed and used at national or international level. Examples include developments within the EOSC, specifically in the FAIRCORE4EOSC project or within the framework of the DFG-funded BITS: BluePrints for the Integration of Terminology Services in Earth System Sciences ([@Wolodkin2024egu5393]) project, which is preparing an inventory as part of a Terminology Service.
If you are interested in any of our interest groups or would like to propose a new one, we welcome your involvement. For more details on how to join, visit the participation page.
