Persistent Identifier (PID) Provision

PID provisioning refers to the process of assigning and managing Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) for digital objects, making them easier to access, share, and cite. PIDs are stable, unique identifiers associated with digital resources (like datasets, articles, software or images) and they remain constant even if the resource's location or other metadata changes. The provisioning process typically involves creating, registering, and maintaining these identifiers to ensure ongoing access and traceability.

Example Implementation:

  • Handles, with instances, such as DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers),
  • IGSN (International Generic Sample Numbers), and
  • ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor IDs)
